MT5 Download Errors: Fixes for Prop Firm Traders

Artificial Intelligence for Trading Udacity

When you’re chasing the dream of becoming a funded trader then nothing’s more frustrating than getting stopped at square one—trying to download MT5 and running into annoying errors. You’d think downloading a trading platform would be the easy part, right? But nope. Sometimes, MT5 just refuses to play nice.

If you're trading for a prop firm or getting ready for an evaluation, you really can’t afford to waste time wrestling with installation issues. Every second counts. So let’s discuss MT5 download errors, why they happen, and how you can fix them.

Why MT5 Errors Matter More for Prop Traders

When you're working with a prop firm, especially during a challenge or funded phase, you’re trading on tight deadlines. You've got specific goals to hit, risk rules to follow, and usually a narrow time frame to prove yourself. If your platform isn't working or you can't even get it installed then you're falling behind before you've even opened a chart.

Also, many prop firms only allow you to use the broker version of MT5 that’s linked to their accounts. That means if something breaks during installation, you can't just shrug and use a different platform. You need it to work—and fast.

Common MT5 Download and Installation Errors

Failed to Download Installer Error

This is the classic one. You click the download link and the installer either doesn’t start, stops halfway, or gives you a cryptic message.

Antivirus or Windows Defender Blocking MT5

Sometimes your own computer acts like MT5 is malware. It’ll block the download or delete files mid-installation.

Installation Freezes or Crashes

Maybe the setup wizard opens but doesn’t complete. Or worse, it crashes halfway through and you’re left staring at a blank screen.

Compatibility Issues on Mac

MT5 wasn’t natively built for macOS and if you’re using a Mac then you’ll need to jump through a few hoops. It’s doable but not always smooth sailing.

Error: “Cannot Open File”

This one usually pops up after installation and it’s often a sign that your computer didn’t install everything properly or a key file is missing.

No Connection to Server After Install

Technically this happens after MT5 is installed—but we’re including it here because it's a common “post-download” issue that feels like the installation broke.

How to Fix MT5 Download Errors (Step-by-Step)

Fix 1: Use the Right Version of MT5 (Broker-Specific)

This might sound obvious, but it’s where a lot of traders mess up. If you’re working with a prop firm, don’t download MT5 from MetaQuotes directly. Most firms use a broker-specific version, and if you install the generic one, it won’t connect to the firm’s server.

Fix:

  • Always get the MT5 download link from the prop firm’s dashboard or welcome email.
  • If you're unsure, reach out to their support and ask for the correct link.

Fix 2: Turn Off Antivirus or Windows Defender Temporarily

If your antivirus is overprotective (and many are), it might block the MT5 installer or delete some files once installed. That’s a common cause of “missing DLL files” or failed installs.

Fix:

  • Temporarily disable real-time protection in Windows Defender:
    • Go to Settings → Update & Security → Windows Security → Virus & Threat Protection → Manage Settings → Turn off “Real-time protection.”

  • If you're using a third-party antivirus (like Norton or McAfee), disable it just while installing.
  • After the install, turn everything back on.

Important: Only disable protection for trusted sources like broker-branded MT5 platforms.

Fix 3: Run as Administrator

Sometimes the installer just doesn’t have the permissions it needs to write files where it wants to.

Fix:

  • Right-click the MT5 setup file.
  • Choose Run as Administrator.
  • Proceed with the installation.

Fix 4: Check for Firewall Issues

If MT5 installs but won’t connect to your prop firm’s server, your firewall could be blocking it.

Fix:

  • Open Control Panel → System and Security → Windows Defender Firewall.
  • Click Allow an app or feature through Windows Defender Firewall.
  • Make sure terminal.exe (MT5's executable) is allowed for both Private and Public networks.

Fix 5: Clear the Installer Cache

If you’ve tried installing MT5 multiple times and it keeps failing, your PC might be holding onto corrupted install files.

Fix:

  • Press Windows + R, type %temp%, and hit Enter.
  • Delete all the files in the temp folder.
  • Restart your PC, then download a fresh MT5 installer and try again.

Fix 6: Use Wine or PlayOnMac for Mac Users

Running MT5 on a Mac isn't plug-and-play unless your broker provides a Mac-ready version (few do). You’ll need to use something like Wine or PlayOnMac to emulate Windows.

Fix:

  • Download PlayOnMac (a user-friendly wrapper for Wine).
  • Install it, then use it to open your broker's MT5 installer.
  • Follow the steps as you would on a PC.

Some functionality may be limited, so always test your MT5 after setup.

Try Portable Version or VPS

If your local machine just won’t cooperate, try running MT5 from a portable version or a VPS.

Fix:

  • Ask your prop firm if they offer a portable MT5 version (some do).
  • Or rent a Windows VPS. Once you're logged in, install MT5 there—most prop firms recommend this for stability anyway.
  • This is especially useful if you’re traveling or on a Macbook.
